Did you know that thousands of seabirds die every year from eating plastic! Many of the world's seabird species obtain their food by skimming it off the surface of the ocean. Unfortunately for them, plastic floats. And often it looks like food.
A Flesh-footed Shearwater chick on Lord Howe Island has been fed so much plastic by its parent, it doesnt survive to make its first flight out to sea. Photo courtesy of Ian Hutton.
Dr. Jenn Lavers and Lord Howe Island naturalist, Ian Hutton, have been studying the effects of plastic ingestion on the Flesh-footed Shearwater (for more information, click here). This research focuses on identifying managment techniques that remove plastics from the birds and their environment.
By making small donations to the SAVE THE SHEARWATER appeal, you'll be assisting our field crew in getting one step closer to Lord Howe Island.
